Larry Paul Hamilton was convicted by a jury of sexual assault in the first degree, an unclassified felony, in violation of AS 11.41.410(a)(1). Judge Peter A. Michalski found that Hamilton had used a dangerous instrument--a knife--in perpetrating his offense and was therefore subject to the ten-year presumptive sentence. AS 12.55.125(i)(2). He also found a number of aggravating factors and sentenced Hamilton to twenty years with five years suspended. Hamilton was placed on probation for five years after completion of his prison sentence. Hamilton appeals, challenging his conviction and his sentence. We will deal with Hamiltons contentions in order, setting out the appropriate facts where necessary to illuminate our Discussion.
